It is a Precious Thing and It is a holy thing

Obstacles and delays can be blessings in disguise.  Our nephew, a London Architect, is visiting us and he is a joy to have in our home.  He sketches and has accompanied me plein air painting.  This week, on our agenda was to view the new Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, designed by architects HOK from Tampa, Florida, Yann Weymouth being the chief architect.

Dali Museum

The new building‘s 68,000 sqf doubles the size of the original one storey warehouse Dali Museum built in 1982.
Utilizing free-form geodesic geometry, the triangulated glass organically flows around and attaches to the rigid unfinished concrete box, a play of hard and soft, protecting Dali’s paintings and simultaneously providing natural daylight and openness to the adjacent bay. This is the first use of this type of free-form geodesic geometry in the United States.
Mesmerizing visitors within the museum is the coiled concrete form that greets them at the reception desk. The poured in place raw concrete spiral staircase is fitted with light cable-stayed stainless steel guardrails. The material choices provide a subtle juxtaposition along with an obvious nod to Dali’s allure with the double helix and other spiral forms in nature.

St. Petersburg Harbour

7 foot Manatee
The Grand Prix was the previous weekend and the road blocks were yet to be uninstalled which forced us to park and wind our way along the waterfront to the Museum.  I particularly wanted A to view the Museum from the water.  We noticed a ripple in the water and what should it be???  a manatee.
Manatee came to us, she liked our whistling
We whistled and it came to the sea wall

We asked for her blessing
The size of this Manatee is approximately 7 feet.
A saying Good-bye to the Manatee
Our day was spectacular.  Art, architecture and the manatee.

Do you seek out buildings because of the architect?

    1. Hello Jacqueline. Yes, for Frank Gehry. If you have not seen them www.charlierose.org has two wonderful interviews with Gehry. Raymond Moriyama is the architect for the War Museum in Ottawa. We attended an opening function and he was present.
I M Pei's Commerce Court in Toronto is impressive too. I also agree with your choice of Frank Lloyd Wright.
Can I add Foster and Partners, who are building the new Apple campus in Cupertino, Ca. I have a selfish motive for this one!!

      Glad you liked the music.

  2. Oh, my, Helen, what a fabulous museum!!! I had heard of it, but I don't think I had seen photos before. Simply outstanding! Dali would have loved it, I think, don't you? And to see the Manatee was wonderful, but to think it would come when you whistled!!! Wow!! A miraculous day, to be sure!
    Have a blessed Holy week,

  3. What a fabulous building Helen and how lovely to see the Manatee. We saw quite a few Manatee when we visited Florida....they are so endearing, aren't they ?
Whenever we want an 'architecture fix', we just hop on a train to London. A twenty minute ride takes us to the city filled with such diverse architecture !!

You are fortunate to be living in London with such incredible architecture and history and if need be you can hop on a plane and be on the Continent is no time.

I hope your wish of meeting a Manatee is fulfilled one day. I trust and hope your sad state was very short lived and that your joyful spirit is restored. My nephew has departed and there is a definite void, he has a wonderful sense of humour too and could possibly have been an actor or comedian, so one can imagine the nonsense that transpired.

  5. Dear Helen, What a coincidence that I was just listening to a talk by an architect, looking into the spiritual dimensions of buildings. I do seek out buildings based on architects and I love that Manatee. My week started off rocky but after this manatee sighting I feel better. Love, Mona

I hope your week has turned around and that fun is restored and the cats are up to their tricks. I would love to hear the lecture you listened to on the spiritual side of buildings.
We, too, love to seek out buildings by architects and how curious that their names do not appear anywhere in the building.
My nephew likened it to Rodin sculpting and not signing it.

How great to see you again and enjoying your time with your nephew.
I remembered the blog about the manatee that came to visit by your house! How exciting to see another, and for him to come to your whistle call.

I do love to see interesting buildings. I am not familiar with the architects thats build them.
I do so much want however to visit the Goudi buildings in Barcelona. I hope one day I can be able to do that.

Sadly his visit has ended and he is now back in London. It was absolutely spectacular for him to see a Manatee. It was one of the highlights of his trip.

Like you, Valerie, I would love to see Gaudi's work and hope to one day.

You are right, I also feel Dali would have been proud of the new museum and the architect did a wonderful job on this project.
      Glad you liked the music.

  9. Hello Helen:
What a superb building. Like so much of Dali's work, this shimmering mass positively flows with a liquidity which is quite likely to take one's breath away. It is, we feel, more than itself and where it attaches to the solidity of the concrete box behind, as you point out, it becomes an art work in its own right. Wonderful and inspirational and a most fitting home for what we believe to be one of the great contemporary artists of our time. And, unlike so much modern architecture, it is completely removed from becoming a pastiche of past times.

As for the Manatee, this is totally new to us! As you might well guess!

    1. Hello Jane and Lance

Your thoughts on the architecture complimenting Dali's work is indeed valid. The architect did a wonderful job and it has humour, which seemed to be very much a part of Dali's life and some of his art.
I hope some day you will visit and on that day I will, if I have to, dredge the harbour and find you a Manatee. They are gentle, vegan, docile and trusting.

      A very Happy Easter

What an amazing building this is. I like the way it looks! Your nephew must have liked it. I hope the exhibition was worth while.

We visited an exhibition of Dali and some of his contemporaries (magic realism) several years ago. It was one of the best I have seen in a long time.

It is indeed a marvelous building and the location is world class. Yes my nephew did enjoy seeing it and I benefitted from seeing it with him, he explained some very positive parts and then what he would do differently. Of course we had to walk all around the building and see where the shipping door was and such. It was amusing as a group overheard him speak and followed us, they possibly thought he was a tour guide.

How interesting to read of the exhibition you speak of. It is always wonderful when it remains with us long after the visit.

  14. Looks like a beautiful interior. Not sure how I feel about the "enigma" of the exterior--although it is interesting! Re: seeking out buildings--Back in the day, so to speak, we sought out buildings for the architect all the time (we were architects, after-all). Now I seek out a building not as much for the architect as for what the building does (museum, library, station, etc.-- especially if historic). Some of my historic favorites: Louis Sullivan, H.H. Richardson, McKim, Mead & White, and some Frank Lloyd Wright. Great post, Helen! And the manatee are spectacular! :)
