Helen Tilston plein air painting, painting is incomplete. |
She loves our art work and her main home has a large collection of our paintings. She has purchased a delightful cottage on the intercoastal waterway, at a bargain price. It was sold in what is known as a *short sale. Her views are spectacular and this 3 bedroom home is in very good condition just needs some new flooring and the walls need painting.
Her thoughts on colour range the full spectrum and she is confused and conflicted on colour.

We had scheduled a day of painting in a historic area of Sarasota and invited our client to join us for lunch.

Equipped with cappucinos we set up painting in historic Burns Court. We received a warm welcome from local shopkeepers who always welcome us with open arms. Our painting en plein air commenced.

We stopped for lunch at a delightful French Restaurant on Main St. We chatted and a little shopping was in order. We took our client to a favourite store and knew she would be inspired by the colours, as we felt they would be fitting for her cottage

A special and eventful day and so much enjoyment. Our client was delighted and her colour selection was chosen. Farrow & Ball is going to receive a paint order and some canvases of ours are being primed.
* A short sale results from what is called an upside down mortgage here in the USA. The mortgage extended is greater than the value of the home and the owners are in default. Enter the bank who are left with the property and decide to accept a low price from a new buyer. I am not allowed to tell you what our client paid for this property, other than say it is ridiculously low. For those with extra money and seeking ocean side property, there are some bargains with views that are exquisite.
(P.S. I neglected to take pictures of Mary Rose painting in Sarasota, so have substituted images of her taken in the past two weeks)
Does living by the ocean appeal to you?
Beautiful painting!!!!! in Spain have similar problems with housing. A hug. Manoli
ReplyDeleteHi Helen,
ReplyDeleteYour day at Indian Rocks beach sounds delightful. The store really nice. Yes, I love living near the beach. From Rotterdam it's not more than a 20 minutes drive. We often go there enjoying the sea air and watching the seagulls and the boats.
Happy new week!
Madelief x
Love your latest painting on the easel - so lively and colourful.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you all had a great time, and that shop looks wonderful!
Sounds like some fab house deal!

Thank you for sharing this fun and interesting day with us. Your painting is beautiful. I love all of the colors in your pictures--we don''t have those vibrant pastels in the northeast. I have always wanted to live by the ocean.
ReplyDeleteIt's good to see you standing your ground for pink, Helen! I'm sure that with your advice she'll end up with a home that's lovely and harmonious, and even more so if it's to be enhanced by a few of your canvases.
ReplyDeleteHello Manoli at By Nela
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting and your supporting words. It seems like a Universal problem with housing and if one had money there are some incredible bargains to be had. In a few years we shall all be saying, why didn't I buy.
Have a delightful week

Hello Madelief
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and yes we had a spectacular day. Good friendship, some painting, a delicious lunch and a spot of shopping. That is life!
My best for a great week

Nice!! I love choosing colours. There's just so many palettes to choose from and it's always a lot of fun!
ReplyDeleteHello Gill @ Gillyflower
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind compliments on my painting. The light is spectacular on this Gulf of Mexico coast and reminds one of the light in Provence, France. There are some wonderful deals to be had on housing on the water, which was unheard of years ago.
Wishing you a great week full of joy and sunshine
Helen xx
Hello Jen
ReplyDeleteThanks for your kind words. The light here on the Gulf of Mexico is spectacular and reminds me of the light in Provence.
I hope your wish of living by the sea becomes a reality. In my humble opinion, one can not be unhappy when living by the ocean (this comes from one who was born 50 yards from the Atlantic ocean and spend my childhood on a beach).
Hope you week is full of joy
Helen xx
Hello Mise
ReplyDeleteGreat minds think alike, dear Mise. I thought of you when I asked Mary Rose to take this picture. Madame X loved it and wants to use this colour in her bathroom. It makes all skin tones just glow, as you so well know.
It is very rewarding that my art is appreciated by some.
Hope life is being good to you and my two little friends.

ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and expressing words of kindness. Art is very rewarding, when all goes well and each day humbles us.
Wishing you a joyful week.
What a lovely tour!
ReplyDeleteLiving by the ocean... in a heartbeat! Just not yet!
Helen, The paintings and the vistas are lovely. I love the pastel tutus hanging. What a beautiful way to display color. What delightful days you must have when painting. Oh, I long to live near the water. I often feel called to the water's edge. Bonnie
ReplyDeleteDear Helen - what a great day you girls had.
ReplyDeleteI did not realise that you live in the Sarasota area. For the past three years I have visited Anna Maria Island, and last March went to the Marie Selby Gardens. I presume that is your Sarasota? if so, it is a lovely place to be.

ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting. It was a fabulous day.
Maybe someday you will be my neighbour here on the Gulf of Mexico.
A very Happy St Valentine's day

Thank you so much for your comment, Helen, which means a lot to me!
I see you shopped at Posh on Palm...I know the historic Sarasota area well. Sounds like a lovely way to spend the day...painting, dining out, and shopping.
ReplyDeleteDear Helen,
ReplyDeleteBurn court looks a light happy place. Your choice of painting is beautiful. You depict the colours so well..your paintings are inviting.
Your client must have been very pleased at the end of the day.
I love the ocean.. i dream one day, that i will have a little cottage , where i can walk onto the beach.
Happy decorating.

Hello Rosemary
ReplyDeleteThanks for your kind words. It is indeed a small world and Selby Gardens are beautiful. We painted there a couple of years ago, when we received our Award from Florida Trust for Historic Preservation. Anna Marie Island is a well kept secret too and how fortunate you visit.
Happy St. Valentine's Day

We had a wonderful time, good friendship, being outdoors and doing what we love is always special.

To answer your question... it must definitely does! But next to a warm ocean (I lived in St Andrews by the seaside up in Scotland as a student... not the same!). But growing up in Mexico City I have always craved to live by a warm seaside town (or at least vacation extremely frequently).
ReplyDeleteLooks like you did a wonderful job, can understand why the client was very happy.

ReplyDeleteBonne Semaine my dear Karin. Thanks for visiting and your kind compliment warms my heart.
There is incredible light here on the Gulf Coast, similar to the South of France.
Our artistic days together are always very special and always lots of joy.

You would just have to transport your beautiful cottage and home to the ocean!. Thank you for your kind word on my painting. I am pleased, it is a good start. It is always so much fun when I paint with Mary Rose and Violetta, we save up our stories and share so much in common.
Hope you are staying warm and painting

ReplyDeleteWhat a contrast between Mexico City and St. Andrews by the Sea, in so many senses. How exciting also that you have been exposed to such cultures. We had a delightful day and you would have loved being with us, I know you would have sketched and captured the fashions and essence of the place.
Thanks for your visit and your sincere compliment is much appreciated.

Hi Helen...I love that I can come here and find so much colour..especially this time of year. Yes..to live by the sea would be wonderful. I have a Pinterest pinboard devoted to 'The Someday House'...and it is by the sea.

I find it fascinating they way you ladies just fit together and paint together and create together - you just sweep aside the image of the difficult, moody, solitary artist!!

My French Country Home
ReplyDeleteHello Sharon
Thanks for stopping in and a very Happy St. Valentine's Day.
Life is too short to be moody, depressed and unhappy in one's art.
Violetta's father, a professor of art and an artist who joined us for morning coffee on this day, has an expression which is:
The artist dips the brush in her paint, brings it through the heart and then on to the canvas. (he makes all the hand gestures with his elegant long fingers). If the heart in unhappy what will the canvas say?
I will say adieu and get my running shoes on, the beach calls
To a great and wonderful day Sharon

I love Sarasota, it was one of the first trips I took with my husband!
ReplyDeleteAll the paintings are so beautiful and what a fun day spent in the company of wonderful friends.
~R
What a really fun day you had! =] I love choosing colors for homes and I love how everyone is different and resonates differently with different color schemes. it's such an expression of ourselves and, even when it's not to my taste - I can deeply appreciate the beauty of someone else's different choices.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that I've always been confused at how I convince myself that I'm going for subtle and natural color schemes in my home and, then, wind up with so much soft color. It's like I can't help it. It's like, I can't see my style. But, then, I've noticed, it's what everyone comments on when they come into my home - it's what people comment on about my photos... So, you see...I love color. =]
and, so, you see...it sounds to me like you had a wonderfully fun day! =]
Enjoyed this outing! Happy Valentine's Day to you.
ReplyDeleteWow, I would love to live by the ocean instead of on the misty (Autumn/Winter) and sticky hot (Summer) Venitian mainland!
ReplyDeleteHelen, thank you so much for your lovely comment on my blog!
Your beautiful paintings make me dream of Summer on a very freezing cold day :)

Gracious, your painting is gorgeous! What a beautiful talent. I WISH I were better at it. Thanks so much for the inspiration.

(p.s. yes, the lace in the window is a vintage piece of tambour.)
Ocean living is the best:-) Thank you for the sweet comment on my blog.
ReplyDeleteHello Helen, what a wonderful day you spent, and great that your client got sorted out as well. We live about 45 minutes from the sea, but it would be lovely to be closer and to walk the shore daily.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for your visit and kind remarks. I am not planning to use the purple spectrum at the moment. My next scheme is the living room which I am planning to do in grey shades, but I was thinking of adding some blue, but perhaps some dusky mauve, heathery shades would look well? So many colours, so much choice!
Enjoy your weekend, love Linda x
Helen, I thought I was already following you! It seems I wasn't, have now rectified this oversight.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful paintings and inspiration from a wonderful location. I currently live at the foothills of the Pyrenees but have always had a hankering to live by the ocean or the Mediterranean...one day.
Yes, yes, yes! Living by the ocean appeals to me very much! The water calms me a lot and the eyes can "graze" and the mind can fly... here in Switzerland this is not possible but I have the same feeling when I go up to the mountains! The colors in your pictures always remind me of Provence! Awesome!
ReplyDeleteHi Helen,
ReplyDeleteJust finished reading some of the posts I had missed, I loved reading the full circle one, wow, lovely story, so nice of you to stop by and leaving me comments, sorry I have been late with responding, but I love coming here, just so you know, enjoy the upcoming weekend! The choice of colour is so easy. (Please note that colour is spelled colour and NOT color)
ReplyDeletePaint everytnih inside a pale cream. Everything outside a lovely grayish beige.
Thanks for stopping by Helen.
ReplyDeleteI would love to be able to paint so beautifully.
I live near the beach, ten minutes. Nearby there is a nature reserve and then from this forest, you walk to the beach. Very beautiful and wonderful to just be there.
Have a nice weekend!

Katy Noelle
ReplyDeleteHello Katy
You are right, we have personal taste when it comes to colour, which one must put aside when selecting colours for the client. In my past life, as designer, I worked at choosing colours for clients's personal wardrobe and I find selecting colour for their homes is an extension of that. The colours of the home should also flatter those who reside there.
Then one can get into the psychology of colour and my oh my, it can go on and on.
From your blog, I see you have sophisticated taste in colour and your home is beautiful.
Thanks for stopping in and wishing you a great weekend.

ReplyDeleteHello Micaela - I hope by now your climate in Venice is getting somewhat warmer. I do remember bring there one time and being so cold. It is such a beautiful part of the world.
The sunshine and light here on the Gulf Coast of Florida is spectacular, it is reminiscent of the light in Southern France.
Thanks for your kindness

We had a delightful day and our client became a friend. She is a joy to work with and is open to suggestons. Sometimes the client gives no clues and it is good to spent time just shopping and browsing and getting to know their taste.
