Lost and Found and the late Queen Mother

Helen Tilston photo by Karin Altpeter

“You are as young as you feel. If you begin to feel the warmth of your soul, there will be a youthfulness in you that no one will be able to take away from you.”
John O'Donohue, Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom

Indian Rocks Beach Florida homes
I was feeling particularly energetic and decided to up my daily run on the beach from 3 to 5 miles.
Indian Rocks Beach Florida

Shore birds at Indian Rocks Beach, Florida

On my return, about 3 miles from home what should dart across my path in haste to the beach but a small poodle dog. (Indian Rocks Beach has a by-law which prohibits dogs from  the beach and imposes a fine of $140.)  She played in the waves as they lapped to shore and ran wildly. I called it and grabbed it and it nestled in my arms. I traced the steps of the dog to some beach-side homes.  I knocked on doors but to no avail nobody ever saw this dog before.  Weighing 16 lbs  I knew this would be a heavy load to carry home, so I asked somebody to drive me home.  After suspicious looks a drive home was secured. The dog had a collar and phone number and  the name Mitzi.  I fed her and she drank water.  My dog, Spice Girl welcomed her and seemed to feel Mitzi's distress. The phone number, a Chicago number, was, sadly, not in service.  We made several phone calls and finally as we were speaking to the Humane Society the owner of the dog was on the other line. We obtained the local phone number for the owners who were visiting from Chicago and both were sobbing and visibly distressed.  We returned Mitzi to their arms  and Spice Girl leaned out the window of the car and kissed Mitzi on the lips. It was the perfect ending.  I wonder how Mitzi would describe here five hour adventure.

Mitzi and Helen saying good-bye

Shortly afterward, the Post Woman knocked on my door and there was a parcel postmarked Royal Mail, from Penarth, U.K.
Yonks and enclosed within the most bautiful stamps including one of the late Queen Mother, who is wearing the same sapphire and diamond brooch she wore when I one time met her at St. James Palace
I shall frame it and it will join my photos of the Royal Family.  Thank you very much Dianne (Yonks).  Dianne writes beautifully and is one of my favourite blogs.

  1. What a good deed you did Helen....Mitzi now being back in the loving arms of her family. ...and to go back to your last post, an act of kindness.
I met the Queen Mother when she opened the Great Hall in our school. I was about 16 at the time, so it was many years ago now !! I do still have a photograph of it.
Have a lovely Sunday....I'm sure that it's warm where you are....it's very snowy here and freezing cold !! XXXX

  3. Hello Jacqueline @ Home

I have been thinking of you and the cold and snowy weather - glad you are cozy and warm. How exciting that the late Queen Mother opened the Great Hall at your school. She was a tremendous lady and such a presence. What a superb role model she was and such a hard worker, her daily schedule was excruciatingly hectic and yet she proceeded and brought love to so many.
Thank you for visiting and wishing you a great week

  4. Hello Jen

It felt so good to find the owner. As a dog owner I know how they must have worried. Street traffic being the biggest concern. I alternate between 3 and 5 miles but being on this beautiful each, the miles seem shorter.
    Have a joyful week

  5. Hello Helen
How lucky that you found Mitzi and reunited her with her owners. They must have been so grateful to you.
I would love to start my day with a 3 to 5 mile walk (no running with my stiff knees!) along Indian Rocks Beach. Such a beautiful place to live.
How lovely to receive the stamps from Dianne, she is such a kind hearted soul. And what a great experience to meet the Queen Mother, she was a wonderful woman.

  6. Hello Abby

Yes indeed Indian Rocks Beach is a delightful place to live. Little Mitzi also approved. There is a busy road that parallels the beach and a dog owners nightmare should their pets escape.
I say I run daily but it end up being about 5 times a week and something will interfere.
Hope you are all warm and that Spotty is in a warm bed of straw.

It was great to find the owners of Mitzi. One always hopes the pet is just lost. Mitzi was overweight and may have had some health issues too.
It was very exciting meeting the Queen Mother. She was so gracious and elegant and talkative too.
Hope you are staying warm and wishing you a great week

  11. How kind of you to go to so much effort to reunite the dog with her owners. I can't imagine their despair and then their great relief when they discovered she was found. I'm also amazed that you met the Queen Mother - and have the picture to prove it. (Not that I doubted you.) WOW!

  17. Lost in Provence

    Hello Heather

Yes, I know how much you love Ben your dog and as a dog owner I know how heartbroken we would be to lose one. I had determined I was not going to surrender Mitzi to the Humane Society and we agreed to keep her till the owner was found. They had feared the worst, as Mitzi was unfamiliar with their rental accommodation and they lived near a busy road.

All is well that ends well and I have to say I was starting to bond with Mitzi as she was so affectionate.
    Have a great week

As dog owners we just love animals and to help a lost one is the least we can do. It is a reminder to all that when travelling to make a dog tag with the phone number of their holiday home. This would have helped greatly.
It was a joy to meet the Queen Mother (for me on 3 occasions).Cameras are not allowed in Buckingham Palace or St. James Palace so the images are taken by the Palace photographer.

It was a shock to see Mitzi cross my path. As no dogs are allowed she looked all the more obvious. What was amazing is how many walked by engrossed in their world and oblivious to it all. When I reached the owner by phone, he was totally choked up with tears and unable to talk from sobbing.
It felt good to help Mitzi

  25. I love stories with happy endings - especially where animals are concerned,so well done on your perseverence in finding the owner. You are so lucky to have met the queen mother. I have always been fascinated with her and loved how she was portrayed in "The King's Speech". Have a lovely week. x Sharon

  26. This is a lovely story Helen and so glad Mitzi was reunited with her owners. My husband jokes that lost dogs gravitate towards me or I always spot them from the car..how can people not assist a distressed dog?
Meeting the Queen Mother must have been a wonderful experience and one to be treasured.
I thought of you today when I visited the Matisse exhibition in my city. I really had no idea he was so prolific, thousands of works during his lifetime. Anyway it got me to thinking Helen, once upon a time I enjoyed sketching and am now pondering rediscovering this pastime. I think I'm old and wise enough nowadays to forget about the quality of a piece and rather just go with the flow and enjoy the experience. Do you agree?

  27. Hello Helen:
Oh we are so relieved that your story of the lost dog had a happy ending. We can well imagine the distress that Mitzi's owners were feeling, knowing that their animal was lost, away from home in an unfamiliar environment. We are sure that there was much joy when all were safely united together again.

But, dear Helen, a 5 mile run.....oh, that has us weak at the knees [literally] just thinking of it!!!

    Hello Sharon

The Editor of our local newspaper devotes her free time to volunteering at Animal Rescue so she quickly provided me with the phone numbers of who to call, which saved time and helped in getting Mitzi home. The Queen Mother performed her duties with a smile on her face. She was extremely disciplined and took a genuine interest in people. I loved the King's Speech too

Mitzi was a little charmer and part of me feels she enjoyed the adventure and attention. Yes the owners were distraught and being away from home added to their distress.

Had I found Trevor, your dog, well the story might have been a bit different. I would have been more demanding in negotiating his return. Weekly if not bi weekly visits would have been contracted. Dog Sitting and a window seat installed in your Brighton home and free membership to your library would do it.

Wishing you a week of joy

I hope you enjoy Anam Cara. John O'Donohue's writing is very special to me. We share the same birthplace. When he died suddenly a few years ago, at a young age
the entire population of Ireland must have just stopped what they were doing, as Radio and TV spoke about him and reading of his work and interviews were re-run and people phoned in saying what he meant to them and how he touched their lives.

It was easy to love Mitzi. She was so affectionate.

I did have a wonderful day and my stamp of the Queen Mother just topped off the day. It will join my "royal wall".

Many thanks for visiting and how nice it is that dogs are allowed on the beaches in NZ. Here the responsible dog owners are being punished because of the negligent ones. We are on a slim barrier island and the narrow road is very busy, so it is dangerous too for dogs to be free.
I have been very spoiled and have met the Queen and most of the royal family on several occasions, at Buckingham Palace and St. James Palace.
    Have a wonderful week
    Helen xx

  89. Helen,
I do love the ocean. I love the sound, the smell, and the amazing colors of the sea. You capture it so beautifully in your paintings.
We have a place on Sanibel, so I am lucky enough to know the Gulf Coast very well. I hope to get down there again soon.
Thank you so much for continuing to come by my blog. I do appreciate it.

  90. Oh bless you Helen for taking Mitzi!!!! Ove the holidays, I just happened to peek out the back of the house at just the right moment to see an unfamiliar little sausage dog running in the side yard...Lottie finally came to me and lo and behold, her owners were from South Carolona and had left her in the care of relatives in outr neighborhood, needless to say, she had escaped and all were in a tizzy, I hate to think of what would have happened to Mitzi or Lottie had they not been placed in our paths...I think 'someone' most definitely, was watching out for them!
